Senior high students will be independently working on how to use the software and programs in order to design an independent project or be a student mentor to an elementary of junior student.
At the end of September/beginning of October junior high and elementary students will be presented with real-world STEM situations and use the engineering design process to solve a problem and then create a prototype using the 3D printer. In this process all students will be introduced to CAD software as well. It is an exciting time! Below is an image of the first student-product made with the 3D printer! Imagine you had 2 hard boiled eggs, string, straws, 5 paper towels, clay, and pencils- could you make a nest that would support an egg so it doesn't crack when dropped?
I bet you can and some 6th grade students had the opportunity to use the STEM designing process to come up with a solution to support a 5 foot drop! Through the engineering design process students asked questions, imagined a solution, planned a solution, created a product, improved on their initial product, and then communicated the results and what worked best. The students worked collaboratively in an effort to improve their listening and collaborative skills. See some of our students in action! Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! A new and eventful school year is upon us and I am looking forward to meeting with parents and teachers to discuss the needs for their students. We have just received a new 3D printer that students will be using this year to explore the STEM and engineering design process. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to use the 3D printer in order to design and create some new ideas and then several opportunities to work with it through out the year.
Here is a new website discovery that students can try at home to tie in STEM components with math curriculum: http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/activities/ AND http://pbskids.org/island/teachers/ I will be available during Elementary Open House on Thursday September 15th from 6-7 PM at the various elementary schools to greet parents and provide information on our gifted services. I look forward to meeting you! Check out Remake Learning Days' events going on all summer long to keep your student engaged in STEM orientated activities. Many of the activities are in the southern Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh area, so take an educational road trip and have some fun!
Check it out: Remake Learning Days Events A BIG congratulations to our elementary gifted students on their efforts in the book club competition today at Huntingdon Area Middle School. These students have been reading a set of predetermined books since November. In the past couple of weeks they have been dissecting the books to identify literary concepts and details in the books. Ten teams participated in the book club today. Students came from Huntingdon Area Middle School, Standing Stone Elementary (HAHS), and our students from MUASD.
The Memorizers Destructorizors placed in first, winning a trophy and a $20 gift card to Amazon. The Book Worms placed in second place today, winning a $10 gift card to Amazon. The Literacy Queens placed in fourth place today. A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Steward and Miss Eckert from HASD in helping set this up and inviting us to participate! There are many upcoming events in the month of May for gifted students in the MUASD. Please be aware of deadlines and information. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]

http://www.giftedpage.org/parent-webinars-on-gifted-issues/ On Wednesday April 6th our elementary students had their last Elementary Gifted Day of this school year. All the students gathered together at Kistler Elementary. It was a day of roller coaster emotions! The students came in nervous ready to present their trip proposals to a school board member and elementary principal. The consensus among all the adults was that all the students did a fantastic job! They all spoke clearly, tied their reasoning to education, and used great vocabulary to persuade their audience. At this end of this month two-three of the students will be presenting at the school board meeting in front of all the school board members and administrators. Following presentations we continued our discussion and review of facts on the Holocaust. This led us to watch the terribly sad movie "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." Following a sad class discussion and making connections, the students enjoyed a fun surprise. They got to play one of their favorite games, "Alliteration Charades." A game of grammar, vocabulary, and fun!
Overall it was a very successful, engaging day all while helping students meet standards at grade level or above grade level. Recently I traveled to all elementary classes 4th-6th grade in the school district introducing the Math 24 game. Students took on a real interest in this game and were seeking ways to practice at home. Math 24 (https://www.24game.com/) is a great game to help students practice their math facts and reasoning. Tournaments were run at each grade level (4th-6th) in each building that concluded with a district tournament last week. It was incredibly impressive watching all these students spit out math expressions before I could even read the numbers on the cards! I want to congratulate the following students that placed at the district tournament and qualified to move on to the Tusacarora Intermediate Math 24 tournament at Juniata College on May 10th. Good luck and keep practicing!
4th Grade: Josh S- Kistler, Madisen W- Shirley, Logan Y- Mapleton 5th Grade: Emma S- Kistler, Tommy H- Kistler, Erika F- Kistler, Kelly B- Mapleton, Shelly B- Mapleton 6th Grade: Alex K- Kistler, Lexi R- Kistler, William H- Mapleton Don't forget to practice your single digit cars, double digit cards, and I will be introducing the variable cards to you this month! Welcome to the gifted services website! My goal is to provide a lot of useful information to parents and students about the services we provide at Mount Union Area School District and what can be done to help our students succeed. Please take some time to explore the site and contact me if you have any questions!
